It is the only private residence in town to have been awarded this heritage status. Set on an expansive piece of land, the property has been beautifully restored and offers a lifestyle opportunity rarely found. At sunrise, the front porch delights in panoramic coastal views, and as the sun travels its path through the course of the day the back yard becomes a place of utmost enjoyment. For the entertainer, a lapa provides cover and room to play, situated alongside a swimming pool and built in gas braai area, with easy access to amenities. Interior living resembles an old world charm. Complete with yellow wood floors, high ceilings, original antique fireplaces and brass detail, it exudes warmth and comfort. Outbuildings include a carport, a rondavel - complete with kitchenette, en-suite bathroom and bedroom facilities, and three single garages with two adjacent storerooms and a workshop. The restoration of White Gables commenced in 1996 when work began toward restoring the property to its former, natural glory. All measures were taken to ensure that materials used were of a similar content and quality of those used in initial construction. Virtually all aspects of the home were appropriately refurbished to the highest possible standard. Three-phase electricity and an underground / in wall gas piping system with connections to the kitchen, fireplaces and outside braai, were wired and fitted during restoration. This, along with an upgraded security system, including electronic beams and motion sensor detectors add to the overall functionality of a home, expertly restored. Built by Captain Thomas Cowderoy, White Gables was one of the very first structures to have been built on the Northern side of Port Alfred's Main Street on the East Bank. Its half meter thick gable walls were constructed from stone and lime mortar extracted locally. All original doors, windows, architraves, fireplace surrounds and ceilings were made from Pine Timber imported from Europe and otherwise known as Baltic Deal. Typical of the architecture used in the early 1800's, the property was built using a classical "U" shape design fronted by two triangular gables. It had only changed hands approximately ten times between the late 1840's and early 1850's until purchased by its current owners. Proclaimed a National Monument in 1985, a unique home ownership opportunity awaits a buyer wanting to continue writing the story of White Gables.
